Acne: Causes, consequences and treatments.

Acne is one of the most frequent skin conditions of our patients. It affects approximately 80% of young people, from puberty to adult life. This condition represents an important medical issue because it influences the quality of life of those who suffer from it on many levels, affecting our patients psychologically, aesthetically and even socially.
Those who suffer this condition (or their family members) should be well informed of the following:
- Acne is caused when there is an excess of sebum production in the sebaceous glands.
- The cell production excess inside the skin’s conduit leads to blockage.
- P. Acnes bacteria proliferate in this condition.
- There is an inflammatory effect that leads to wounds and possible side effects such as scarring.
There are different levels of Acne, which can be light, moderated and severe.
Certainly, hormones have a great deal of importance in causing acne, and in women, we must do deep and proper research, like in the case of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (POC).
We can also add that our patient’s life choices have s great influence on the condition. There is a direct connection of what a patient eats, if he or she consumes fast food regularly, the body’s insulin levels will be highly impacted. We also need to evaluate the patient’s stress levels because this is also a factor that affects this condition.
Treatment should not only be limited to creams, antibiotics, facials or over the counter solutions. There are well researched and established protocols to manage a patient’s acne condition, and this issue must be addressed in a truly comprehensive manner.
In our clinic, we approach this condition with a cross-sectional vision: To start, the patient is thoroughly studied from a nutritional standpoint, then we analyze the proper products that need to be applied, depending on the patient’s skin type considering hydration and UV protection.
The use of medication should be according to the severity of the condition, we prescribe medication, generally in cream form. We can also recommend antibiotics during a limited period of time as well as Isotretinoin when needed.
Isotretinoin medication is very effective when used properly since it helps patients achieve great results.
There are also other acne treatments and procedures that we can help our patients here at the clinic.
- Blackheads and pustules’ proper extraction.
- Specific acne peeling treatments.
- Venus Glow, a system that uses double distilled water to extract pore impurities, which is practically painless.
